This study compares between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and embolectomy using an experimental device called the Merci Retriever with standard treatment in acute stroke patients to identify people who might benefit from the device.
Patients between 18 and 85 years of age who have had a stroke caused by blockage in one of the major brain arteries within 8 hours of the proposed experimental treatment may be eligible for this study. Patients whose stroke results from bleeding may not participate.
